This adjustment will bring the total payment for singles on the Disability Support Pension or Carer Payment to $1,114.40 per fortnight, and couples will receive $862.60 each, including the energy supplement.
Social Services Minister Amanda Rishworth emphasized the importance of these increases in providing relief to those who need it most. “We know that many Australians are doing it tough right now, with cost-of-living pressures affecting daily life,” Rishworth said. “These increases will help ensure that our most vulnerable citizens, including pensioners and those on carer payments, have a little more room in their budgets to manage essential expenses.”
Significant Increase to Commonwealth Rent Assistance
One of the most pivotal changes will be to Commonwealth Rent Assistance, which will see a 10 percent increase on top of the annual indexation. This is expected to offer relief to those grappling with escalating rental costs. For singles without children renting on their own, the increase translates to an extra $23 per fortnight for those receiving the maximum Rent Assistance rate, while families with one or two children will see their payments rise by $27.02.
Minister Rishworth highlighted the impact of this boost: “With the cost of housing skyrocketing, it’s crucial that we provide more support to those struggling to keep a roof over their heads. Since the Albanese Government came into office, we’ve increased the maximum rates of Commonwealth Rent Assistance by around 45 percent. This is about making sure that people aren’t forced to choose between paying rent and putting food on the table.”
Increases to JobSeeker and Parenting Payments
The indexation will also benefit those on JobSeeker, with single recipients without children expectedd to receive an additional $15.30 per fortnight. For JobSeeker recipients assessed with a partial capacity to work of 0 to 14 hours per week, the adjustment will be even more significant, with an increase of $71.20 per fortnight.
Parenting Payment Single recipients will see their payments increase by $19.80, bringing the total to $1,026.30 per fortnight, including supplements. These changes are intended to provide necessary financial support to single parents and those on JobSeeker, helping them navigate through the challenges of the ongoing period of recession.
